Millions of people around the world suffer from a mental health issues that appears in many forms and intensities, a mental health issue that does not discriminate —anxiety. Anxiety does not discriminate when it comes to age, gender, or socioeconomic status. However, it is important to note that certain demographic groups tend to be more susceptible to anxiety disorders:

A. Gender: Research consistently shows that women are more likely to experience anxiety disorders than men. According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, “From the time a girl reaches puberty until about the age of 50, she is twice as likely to have an anxiety disorder as a man” (Anxiety Disorders Association of America).

B. Age: Anxiety can impact people of all age groups. It tends to arise commonly during adolescence and early adulthood. Individuals in these age brackets may experience anxiety due to demands, career aspirations and societal expectations. It is particularly prevalent among individuals who face the pressures of performance, social relationships and the transition into adulthood. Factors such as social media usage, cyberbullying incidents and the fear of missing out (FOMO) have also been associated with anxiety in generations. Thewaveclinic.com claims that, “Mental health issues are widespread for young adults growing up in a world where technology has many of us glued to our phones instead of enjoying friendships in real-time”(thewaveclinic.com). Early intervention and adequate support systems play a role in mitigating the impact of anxiety on people.

C. Socioeconomic Status: People from lower socioeconomic backgrounds may experience heightened anxiety due to financial stress, limited access to healthcare, and exposure to adverse living conditions.

People of all ages, genders and socioeconomic backgrounds go through anxiety as a health challenge. However certain demographics and groups may experience its effects intensely. To reduce the impact of anxiety it is important to prioritize support, for well being, promote intervention and address systemic inequalities that contribute to disparities in anxiety. As a society, we can strive to achieve mental health for everyone by recognizing the experiences of anxiety individuals have.
